How can I tell if I need a root canal?

The most common and noticeable symptom of an infected tooth that requires root canal treatment is pain that steadily worsens over time. But not everyone who gets a tooth infection has symptoms, which is why seeing your Rockaway, NJ dentist every six months for dental exams is so critical.

Aside from an excruciating toothache, some signs that you might have a root canal infection are:

  • Intense, throbbing toothache that worsens over time
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Pain near your ear, jaw, or neck on the same side as the affected tooth
  • A tender, discolored, or loose tooth
  • A raised white spot or “pimple” on your gums
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth or bad breath
  • Redness or swelling in your face

If you notice any of these symptoms, call your root canal dentist in Rockaway as soon as possible. A root canal infection won’t go away without treatment and can even spread to other parts of your body and become life-threatening.

Even if you do need root canal therapy, you shouldn’t worry. Today the procedure is far more comfortable than it’s ever been before and will quickly relieve your toothache. Dr. Stephen Kao and our team practice gentle dentistry that includes calming sedation options like nitrous oxide and even IV sedation right here at our dental office.

If you have a throbbing toothache or another symptom, call our Rockaway, NJ dental office, so we can get you on our schedule right away—probably the same day.
